My specialty is providing the home garlic gardener with a range of interesting and unusual garlic varieties.
Start your garlic garden with my collection, gathered from Tasmania's rich cultural heritage of migrant heirlooms and industry trial varieties. Almost two decades of garlic collecting, planting, weeding, harvest, research, observation, trial, failure and success. Choose from short, medium and long storing types for your own fresh garlic supply.
No more foreign fumigated garlic later in the year!
My garlic is grown under the clear sky and fresh air of King Island, Bass Strait,Tasmania, in the path of the Roaring 40's, using NO pesticide or herbicide, NO fumigant or GMO
Did you know?
There are at least eleven different known 'types' or groups of garlic.
Ancestral wild garlic originated in the ravines of the Silk Road region of central Asia, then spread around the Earth, domesticated and carried by humans, evolving and transforming into many, many varieties to arrive ten thousand years later on our small island at the bottom of the world, on a journey to you! And that's another fascinating story ......
"Is purple garlic best?" Garlic comes in many colours - purple, white, pink, tan, red. While interesting and beautiful, colour is not the most important factor of good garlic. Some garlic groups include varieties with a range of subtle flavours, shapes, sizes and storage qualities. Some are early maturing, some are harvested later, some are short-storing, others keep longer, even up to a year. Some types may grown larger than others. Some like it hot, some like it cold. Some are mild and sweet tasting when cooked, where others are strong and pungent! So if you know your garlic and carefully choose your varieties, you can grow fresh garlic in your own garden to last through the year, to suit any dish!
We now know so much more about garlic - no longer just hardneck or softneck, purple or white!
Garlic is not just garlic!
"Shallots are for babies, onions are for men, garlic is for heroes" - a 16th Century poet.
